The Day I Killed My Cool
First let me confess that I sometimes listen to Radio Disney. I know, I know. I can feel your disdain from way over here.
But see I have a really, really good excuse for having Radio Disney programmed into the car stereo (well, actually my husband’s car stereo since I DON’T HAVE A CAR ANYMORE).
My daughter. She’s seven. She likes a couple Hannah Montana songs and well, they play the holy hell out of them on that station so she will usually ask me to put it on because there’s a 97.4% chance that she will hear one or both of those songs in the 7 minutes it takes us to get home from school.
Sometimes when she’s not in the car I forget to change the station and uh…I just listen to it. Yeah. And sometimes I even hear songs I like a little. Oh okay fine — a lot. There are a few songs I like a lot and if I’m alone in the car, I’ll turn them up really loud and dork out hard.
So the other day I have to stop and get gas and I’m listening to this song that I really like and I turn up the stereo so I can hear it while I’m filling up.
While I’m pumping my gas, the place starts blowing up and suddenly there are people all around me also getting gas but you know, it’s all good. I’m bobbing my head to the music, having a swell time.
And then the song ends. *insert loud needle scratch sound effect here*
Immediately I hear, as does everyone else at the gas station, the DJ saying “You’re listening to RADIOOOOOO DISNEYYYYYYYY!
Trust me, there’s NO way the all the yuppie hipsters around me didn’t catch that I, a grown woman, was ROCKING OUT to Radio Effing Disney.
I know it probably doesn’t compare to the time you walked through a nice restaurant with your skirt tucked into your hose but still… Really embarrassing. I could literally FEEL whatever shred of coolness I may have possessed shrivel up and die right there on the spot.
If there’s a lesson to be learned here, I guess it’s to hurry and pump your gas before the song ends. Or use an iPod.
Here it is… The song that I killed my cool over. I can’t help myself. It’s just so catchy. *hangs head in shame*

Radio Disney IS cool. See, you are so hip you know what’s in and all. It would be way worse if it was Easy Listening or Light Pop.
Can you tell I have a 6 year old Hannah fan and I like that song too?
I, too, listen to Radio Disney. Yes, sometimes even when the kid is not in the car with me.
And I’m a Squizz devotee. Talk about conflict.
Funny. Now I’m jealous that I’ve never listened to this Radio Disney.
I’m hoping that once our kids are grown, someone hands us our inner cool back. I miss it.
Seems like I’m not all alone…
We have some kind of a similar experience…
:)
Now I don’t feel so bad admitting my shameful stereo enjoyment: I listen to my girls’ Disney Princess CD even when they are not in the car. (Hey, there are some great songs on there!)
At least it wasn’t Al B. Sure.
Babe, cool comes from the young. If you are youthful enough to rock out to catchy and a dancey songs…more power to you!

Using My Words
Mercifully, the Radio Disney years don’t last that long.
But then they start listening to stuff like Souljah Boy.
Oh, just face it. Your days of being cool are over.
personally i think it’s cool to admit you like dorky things.
dorky = cool.
yeah, i’m kind of a weirdo, what of it?
Three words: High School Musical.
Two more: 1 and 2.
Yeah, my cool boat sailed ages ago. A-G-E-S.
Izzy, your cool is hanging out with mine, for I have that song ON my iPod and LISTED in my favorites.
Radio Disney doesn’t come in very well for us so we don’t listen to it. But we all have those moments, you gave everyone a good laugh, but most likely they have forgotten by now and you can have your cool back!
That is a kinda catchy tune, I would’ve have probably cranked it up too. Luckily my son hasn’t gotten into radio Disney yet, but I thought it was funny when he went to school singing Du Hast by Rammstein.
Don’t worry. I’ll still say hi when I pass you in the hall after homeroom.
I don’t think a little RADIOOOOOO DISNEYYYYYYYY! could kill your coolness, Izzy. Never, never, never…
Um, I don’t listen to Radio Disney. And I don’t have kids. But I LOVE that song! But it is cool. Because it is played on Sirius Hits 1 and on one of the “cool kids” radio stations in Chicago.
Or that’s what I tell myself.
How is it possible to be cool and drive a minivan? It’s not, so I say what the heck and turn up the GnR and Van Halen and the like and bop to my own cool beat. Screw everyone else, right?
Can I admit that I think that song is super cute and boppy. And that new Ashley Simpson song, I kinda like it too. It reminds me of the 80’s. Very sugary and boppy. Both are great songs to run to… Ya know?
You know? I was actually telling my husband, “I’d like a radio station that’s kid friendly and not churchy” then BLAMO, alone in my car I found radio disney. And I listened. The whole way to the airport during one of the only alone trips in the car I’ve had in six months.
At least you are cool enough to know it’s a THANG, yaknow.
I didn’t know about the Disney radio station and I’m 61…I have Sesame Street and nursery songs on my cd’s and a customer drove my car unexpectedly and asked why? So now I’ll have the cd’s and my Disney station, and my favorite movie is stilll….Heidie and Cinderella.. I can still here Shirley Temple..yelling grandfather and my heart skips…
Thanks Dorothy from grammolgy
remember to call gram
Another good reason to drive out of my way to get cheap gas where there is no one I know! Although I agree, I think you just may be too hip to be cool!
Girl, I sing a MEAN version of Victor Vito….when I had a more stressful/more shitty job I used to totally put on the Laurie Berkner on the way home and just SING ….a total de-stress.
Victor Vito and Freddie Vasco ate a burrito, with tabasco…….
Yep, I’m with Gidge-I love the We are the Laurie Berkner Band songs. And the Best of Big Kids CD, and the That Baby CD. The radio stations here are pathetically bad, and I don’t get Radio Disney, but I like this Aly and AJ song! And you are the hottest dork on the planet, you know :)
Merry Christmas sweetie!
RIP your street cred…
But wait - Disney has a RADIO CHANNEL? WTF? They are seriously trying to take over the world. It’s scaring me.
Sometimes you just have to roll with it.
I would have put my double-viking fingers in the air, head-banged and yelled “hell’s yeah!”
Then jumped in the minivan and screeched away before anybody reconized me
Dang that was funny. And I cringe ‘cuz I too have caught myself rocking out to Trout Fishing In America.
Delurking to give a quick “hellz to the yeah” on the aly and aj fans. My daughter is 8, so it pretty much goes without saying that High School Musical is LIFE.
Wait. Doesn’t everybody listen to the HSM soundtrack THREE HUNDRED TIMES A DAY and still enjoy it? And PUH-LEASE don’t tell me I’m the only one who visits the Webkinz website late at night, sans kid, to play the games! OK, while this definitely makes me a dork IRL, in parenting world, this makes me the COOLEST MOM in my hood!…I mean, I think…
i love radio disney. and i don’t care who knows. i love hannah montana…. the san francisco radio stations up here suCK- it’s not my fault fucknig radio disney is thebest station
You’re also waaaay younger and cuter than me. You can get away with it!
I felt the same way when I started liking animated movies, liked Disney….
FENICLE’s last blog post..Staple Removal from the Gimpy Girl
HA! we have a rule, no kids music in the car. HOWEVER, my hubby would say MY music ain’t that cool either so what’s the diff?
THANK GOD. I thought I was the only mom in America that liked the Radio Disney tunes. Potential Break Up Song is my kids’ favorite song. I know all the words to all the Hannah Montana songs, the Aly and AJ songs and LOVE the new Carrie Underwood Ever, Ever After song. Sometimes I even get a hankering to watch High School Musical and HSM 2, which we have on TiVo.
Uh, oh…did I go too far…?
I LOVE THAT F*#^ing song!!! I have an 8 yr old Hanna fan-na. BUT, I completely forgot about radio Disney. I always just have it on the local pop station, then I have to change the station when a song about big fat booty’s comes on. Now that is embarassing when your then 7 yr old sings out loud… I LIKE BIG BUTTS AND I CANNOT LIE, YOU OTHER BROTHERS CANT DENY. Thanks alot Kiss fm, and freeking Shrek!
I got satellite radio primarily for this channel. MB won’t let me play my hip-hop rap stations while BJ is in the car. No shame in my game. I leave it on all the time and jam away while in traffic. Sometimes you need the clean music to clear your head.
Being an ex-dance teacher–I had to listen to all kinds of music and I never knew what I would start singing in the house. Sometimes my husband thought I had lost it! I just told him he should be proud to have a wife that kept up with the times.–Good Cover!!!!!
