Happy Birthday to Meeee, I’m Now For-teeee

Normally, I wouldn’t devote a blog post to my birthday but dudes — it’s the big 4-0!

I feel almost obligated to note the day even though I don’t feel any older than I did last week or even last year (and in some ways, I actually feel better).

“WHAT??? How can that be?” you say! Has she lost her mind?

It’s true, though.

Recent unpleasant circumstances notwithstanding, I feel more confident in who I am now than I did when I was thirty.

I feel more free to speak my mind and I also find it easier to not sweat the small stuff and I feel like I have a much better grasp on what’s truly important in life.

And? I don’t care about cellulite so much anymore. I know…total bonus, right?

Also, please correct me if if I’m wrong, all you forty plus ladies out there, but isn’t this supposed to be about the time we start hitting our sexual peak?

DO TELL

Inquiring forty and almost forty year old minds want to know!

••••••

A great big thank you to my friend Shannon of Believer in Balance for giving me a Perfect Post Award for “How I wish.” This is turning out to be a pretty good day after all :)

you are kind of way hotter than I expect a 40-year-old to be; i.e., SERIOUSLY, are you lying? because I think you might be lying. I think you might actually be about 26.

    hottie.

p.s. happy berfday, toots. I heart you, Iz.

I’m 38. I know my husband’s rooting for the increased sexual drive in my 40’s. Actually I think at this point he’s kinda hoping maybe it’s 38 1/2. Poor hubby!

Happy happy happy birthday to you! 40 is HOT! 20 is growing up from childhood, 30 is settling in to adulthood, and 40 is finally, finally hitting stride, so enjoy!

Happy birthday! You certainly don’t look 40! In fact, if you’re the posterchild for 40, I think I’d like to just zoom past the next 5 years, please.

I hope your 40s are truly as fabulous as you are, Izzy.

I’m 38… and let me tell you, I wouldn’t be 28 again for anything (well, except for the ass… that looked much better at 28)… happy birthday, Izzy, I hope this year brings you nothing but joy.

Happy Birthday — you’re only a few days older than I am :)

  36. By GraceD on Sep 4, 2007

Dollin Izzy, happy birthday you precious one.

And now, to smackdown the ageist readers:

Stop with the “you don’t look 40″ crap, okay? 40 looks and is great.

It’s ridiculous in the 21st century to expect 40 to look anything else than fabulous. This is not the 1507 when human life expectancy was probably 45 and that 40 back then is the 89 now. We’re more studly and bitchin, working out, eating smart, going to therapy. Also, modern day antibiotics keeps the tuberculosis and other potentially killer maladies away, along with handwashing and vastly improved birth delivery techniques.

    /anti-ageist rant

Back to you, Izzy. The peak is real. Enjoy it. Order something from the sex positive folks at Good Vibrations. (Warning - may be NSFW) You deserve it. Well, you really deserve a romp with the celebrity of your choice, but as busy mothers we must make do.

    Love,
    GraceD

  37. By GraceD on Sep 4, 2007

    BTW, I meant -

    “this is not 1507″

    rather than

“this is not the 1507″ which sounds like the year 1507 is something along the lines of “The OC”.

I guess all this misinformed bs about women in their 40s on up whips me up into a cronemudgeon state.

  38. By Desert Songbird on Sep 4, 2007

Happy Birthday, Izzy. As a 45-year old (who can pass for 35, or so I’ve been told numerous times), I can honestly say that the sex DOES get better. Part of it is being more comfortable in your own skin, part is not being afraid to ask for what you want, and I think a large part of it for me is having older kids who don’t bug you in the middle of the night!

  39. By Amy on Sep 4, 2007

Happy Birthday! I’ve been forty for two and a half years already & I’m here to state that it’s actually no different than your thirties or twenties. (Shhh, don’t tell anyone! Our secret!)

  40. By Chag on Sep 4, 2007

    Happy Birthday, Izzy!

  41. By kittenpie on Sep 4, 2007

You’re FORTY? Oh crap, I never would have believed that.

  42. By BOSSY on Sep 4, 2007

Hmmm. Not sure about the Peak thing. Maybe Bossy needs a new pair of hiking boots.

  43. By Occidental Girl on Sep 4, 2007

I absolutely agree with you, that to age is to gain much wisdom about life, and it’s worth it.

    Happy Birthday!

  44. By Caren on Sep 4, 2007

    Happy Birthday Izzy!!

  45. By Elizabeth on Sep 4, 2007

Happy Birthday Izzy! I turned 40 in January, expected to feel different in some way, and yet I really don’t. Except that my hair is thinner and my complexion is now making me consider those “Fight the 7 signs of aging” beauty treaments. But I have to say, since you asked, that I do seem to also be experiencing the sexual peak thing. I find myself getting horny at the oddest times, and thinking about sex more, too. Which is weird for me, I have to say.

  46. By PunditMom on Sep 4, 2007

Happy b-day, girlfriend. I hope you really get to enjoy it! As someone who is closer to 50 (though to most I will deny it!) than to 40, I say try to enjoy this great time. As for the sex — Mmmmm — not so much. ;(

  47. By Major Bedhead on Sep 4, 2007

    Happy Birthday, Izzy!

I’m going to be 41 this year and it hasn’t been the best time, but it has less to do with being 40 and more to do with things going all pear-shaped on me several times. So, yeah, I got nothin’. Aren’t I just a little ball of sunshine?

  48. By flutter on Sep 4, 2007

Happy Birthday, woman. If I am as hot as you are at 40 I am going to run nekkid through the streets proclaiming my birthday hotness

Happy birthday! I am a big believer in announcing my own birthday. I walk around all day on my birthday saying “hey, guess what? it’s my birthday!” “is it your birthday? No? Oh, well, it’s mine!” Annoying, but then, on my birthday I don’t care so much!

Happy Birthday! I turned 40 this year and I’m finding it unexpectedly wonderful. It’s like a circuit flipped in my brain and I no longer care what anyone thinks of me. That may be why I dyed my hair blue this summer…

  59. By Jeff on Sep 4, 2007

I only saw that one self-portrait, but you do not appear to be 40 years old. I would have guessed 34 or so…happy b-day Izzy!

  60. By Fairly Odd Mother on Sep 4, 2007

Wait! I thought 30’s were our sexual peak? But, seeing as I just turned 40 as well, I’ll let you know! (well, maybe I won’t—I’m a bit shy about that sort of talk!)

Happy Birthday!!!! Welcome to this decade!

I wish you only the best in the upcoming year.

  63. By Mom101 on Sep 4, 2007

I thought it would be cool if I were commenter #40 on the big 4-0 post but I think I’m like 90 billion or something.

Happy birthday Izzy! You are a stunning example of why the youngsters shouldn’t fear forty.

  64. By Mocha on Sep 4, 2007

Honestly, I’d be really pissed off if I didn’t meet you in person and fall in love instantly (really, do you have to be sooooo nice?) but you’re giving me hope for that next milestone.

    Happiest of Birthdays, my friend.

A belated Happy Birthday. I hope I am half as beautiful and wise when I reach that milestone–which ain’t gonna happen since I only have two years.

Oh but I have been an early bloomer in other areas–and yes, the sex drive is amazing! ENJOY!!

  79. By Glennia on Sep 6, 2007

Happy Birthday! I’m way past forty, and I can tell you that 40+ is awesome! You no longer give a crap what other people think, and can wear stripes and plaids together if you want. Or maybe that’s dementia…I can’t remember. Anyway, I thought the sex drive thing was in your late 30’s, but 40 is the new 30, so there you go.

  80. By crazymumma on Sep 6, 2007

Being a smokin’ hot 45 year old I can totally understand the freedom that comes with being 40 and up. Finall, I no longer care what anyone thinks of me…

As to sexuality, it took awhile for mine to come back after the kids, and once I got used to the extra bunch of stuff around the middle and my boobs having a life of their own…I relaxed into it.

    Happiest of birthdays Izzy.

Izzy, at 61 I can tell you the age I always want to go back to was my 40’s for all the reasons you think. Its a beautiful time because you do know more about yourself physically and mentally. And my dear, sexually it was the best time. You have the most energy and once again a clear understanding of your own personal needs. Enjoy the time..you have till about 55 when you begin to slide ever so slightly..even then they are wonderful times, however, the body begins to betray you..so enjoy…and live life your way…. Hugs to a brave women..

  92. By Suburban Oblivion on Sep 8, 2007

Belated Happy Birthday and welcome to one of life’s new beginnings. Yes, at 40 we begin to let go of some pasts, heartaches, others’ expectation and other things which just won’t be. Am turning 1 decade older than you in less than a couple of months from now and still think I am young enough to always start anew.
